CV vs Resume: What's the Difference?

Which document should you send? The answer depends on the country and the job. Here is a simple guide.

Short answer: outside the USA and Canada, "CV" and "resume" mean the same thing: a 1–2 page summary of your experience. In the USA and Canada, a resume is that short document, while a CV is a long, detailed academic record used for research, teaching and medical jobs.

Frequently asked questions

Is a CV the same as a resume?

In everyday use outside North America, yes — "CV" is simply the word for the document you send with a job application. In the USA and Canada, a CV is a long academic document and a resume is the short 1–2 page job application document.

Should I call it a CV or a resume in India?

Both words are used in India and employers treat them as the same. "Resume" is common in IT and corporate hiring, "CV" in academia and the public sector. Use whichever word the job advert uses.

Can I use the same template for a CV and a resume?

Yes. All MakeFreeCV templates work for both. For a US resume, choose US Letter size, remove the photo and keep it to one or two pages.
